A heartbreaking case in California has ended with a father sentenced to life in prison for brutally killing his young son. The case has shocked the community and highlighted the dangers of child ab*se.
Father Sentenced to Life for Killing Toddler
Ezequiel Ramirez, 28, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus 35 years, after pleading guilty to first-degree murder with the special circumstance of torture. The victim was his 23-month-old son, Joziah Ramirez.
Ramirez also pleaded guilty to seven felony counts including pimping, pandering, and soliciting for prostitution. Authorities revealed that he had impregnated Joziah’s mother when she was just 15, while he was about 20 and on parole for robbery and statutory rape.
Criminal Activity and Background
Even while on parole, Ramirez continued contacting Joziah and his mother, violating his parole conditions. Later, he allegedly forced Joziah’s mother, who had turned 18, and at least one other woman into prostitution in Tulare and Fresno counties.
Ab*se of Toddler
During the summer of 2020, authorities say Joziah was regularly ab*sed. His mother told police that Ramirez would even lift the boy by his hair. On 5th June 2020, while at a hotel in Visalia, Ramirez severely ab*sed Joziah while continuing his criminal enterprise.
When Joziah’s mother returned to the hotel, she found him unresponsive with blood on the bedding. Ramirez falsely claimed he had only kicked the child in the stomach and forbade her from calling an ambulance. He then tried to cover up the ab*se by telling a friend that Joziah had fallen down stairs and deleted messages from the mother’s phone before fleeing.
Medical Findings
Joziah was rushed to a hospital and later airlifted to another facility, but he was declared brain-dead and passed away on 9th June 2020. Medical examinations revealed severe injuries:
- Fractures on both sides of the skull and ribcage
- Brain swelling and bleeding
- Bruises, burns, and abrasions on limbs, torso, and genitals
Doctors confirmed the injuries were consistent with being struck, shaken, thrown, kicked, and burned. The cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.
Flight and Arrest
After the incident, Ramirez fled for four days, continuing to attempt recruitment for his prostitution operation. He was caught on 9th June 2020. Initially, he denied harming his son but later admitted being present, minimizing the severity of his actions.
Statements and Legal Actions
Tulare County District Attorney Tim Ward called Ramirez’s actions “brutal and callous” in contrast to the toddler’s innocence. Joziah’s mother, who failed to protect him, pleaded guilty to felony child endangerment and is set to be sentenced on 17th June 2026 to a maximum of six years. Authorities described Joziah as smart, active, and nearly potty trained at the time of his death.
