Dog 'continuously shivers' after perilous rescue from Upstate New York river

Seneca River, NY – Local authorities carried out a dramatic rescue on Monday, saving a goldendoodle from the freezing waters of the Seneca River.

The Rescue Effort

At around 6:00 p.m. on March 23, 2026, 911 received a call about a dog seen swimming in the middle of the Seneca River. The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office responded immediately, and the Air1 helicopter crew, who were on a routine patrol flight, arrived at the scene in under a minute.

Upon reaching the location, the aircrew spotted a goldendoodle struggling to stay afloat in the icy waters. Due to the dog’s condition, a skid rescue was carried out.

The Skid Rescue

A member of the Air1 flight crew carefully walked along the helicopter’s skid, securing himself to the aircraft before guiding the pilot toward the dog. The daring rescue was captured on video, showing the crew member lifting the dog onto the helicopter safely.

By 6:15 p.m., the goldendoodle was successfully rescued and brought aboard the helicopter.

Post-Rescue Care

The dog, visibly cold and shivering, was taken to a nearby ball field on Downer Street, where personnel from the Baldwinsville Fire Department were waiting with blankets to warm the animal.

Community Efforts Recognized

The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office praised the efforts of 911 operators, the Air1 flight crew, and Baldwinsville firefighters for their quick response and teamwork in saving the dog.
