A long-anticipated retail addition has finally opened its doors in rural New Mexico. After months of speculation and preparation, a new Dollar General store officially opened on March 1 in the community of Mimbres, giving residents a convenient local shopping option.
Dollar General Opens New Store in Mimbres
The new store is located at 2700 N.M. 35 in Mimbres, about one mile north of the intersection with N.M. 152 in Grant County, New Mexico. Residents had been waiting for more than a year since plans for the store were first reported in late 2024.
Although the building had been completed earlier, the company waited for final inspections before opening. Over the past few months, social media posts from residents tracked the store’s progress, with excitement increasing once merchandise began arriving about two weeks before opening day.
Residents Welcome the Convenience
For many people in the rural community of Mimbres, New Mexico, the new store significantly reduces travel time for everyday purchases.
Local resident Luis Chavez, who lives nearby, said the store is a welcome addition to the area.
“It’s really nice,” Chavez said.
Another resident, Liz Cardenas, highlighted how much easier it will be to pick up small items.
“It’s so nice when you only need one item,” she said. “It saves you from having to drive 45 minutes to get it.”
Resident Terry Ploeckelmann also praised the new store, calling it “extremely convenient” for people living in the surrounding rural areas.
Part of Dollar General’s Nationwide Expansion
Dollar General describes itself as the largest small-box retailer in the United States, with more than 20,000 stores nationwide.
The company was founded in 1939 by J.L. Turner and his son Cal Turner Sr. with an initial investment of $5,000. The first store under the Dollar General name opened in Springfield, Kentucky in 1955.
Today, the chain continues expanding into rural and small communities across the country.
Fourth Dollar General in Grant County
The Mimbres location is now the fourth Dollar General store in Grant County. Other nearby locations serve residents in:
- Silver City, New Mexico
- Santa Clara, New Mexico
- Hurley, New Mexico
The company plans to open more than 450 additional stores across the United States in 2026 as part of its continued growth strategy.
