President Donald Trump recently addressed his reluctance to wear a bulletproof vest in public, following an alleged attempt on his life at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. The president admitted he was hesitant to wear protective gear, citing concerns that it would make him appear heavier than he is.
Reluctance to Wear Body Armor
During a meeting with reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, April 30, Trump responded to a question about body armor. He quipped that he would prefer not to wear a vest because it would make him look “20 pounds heavier.” He joked that some of his Secret Service agents, who regularly wear the vests, are “physical specimens,” and added:
“If you want to gain 20 to 25 pounds, you can get a vest.”
Despite his lighthearted comments, Trump expressed a reluctance to wear body armor, suggesting that doing so would feel like “giving in to a bad element.”
Praise for Protective Gear’s Effectiveness
While admitting his personal hesitations, Trump acknowledged the protective gear’s effectiveness. He mentioned that a Secret Service agent who was shot during the recent White House Correspondents’ Dinner was “totally protected” by the vest.
Trump also noted that he has occasionally worn body armor during campaign rallies, but said it left him feeling “sweaty and spent,” which contributed to his reluctance to wear it more often.

Focus on Appearance and Image
Trump’s comments about the bulletproof vest reflect his well-known concerns about appearance, media image, and self-promotion. The president’s weight has recently been reported as 224 pounds, a number experts say is not accurate, but still places him in the overweight category.
Although he has publicly admitted that he “probably should” take obesity drugs, Trump has not yet taken that step. His focus on maintaining his image has often sparked attention, especially as he has been known to use makeup to cover bruising, particularly on his hands.
Social Media Reactions
Trump’s reasoning for avoiding the bulletproof vest prompted widespread reactions on social media. Anti-Trump influencer Jo Jo From Jerz commented sarcastically:
“He’s sitting there covered head to toe in cake makeup, hunched over the desk like a cooked shrimp while covering his decomposing greyscale hand, so clearly, he’s deeply concerned about the optics of his appearance.”
The use of makeup to conceal discoloration on his hands during high-profile events, such as a state visit with King Charles III, has been widely noted.

Criticism of Vanity and Security Spending
Trump’s vanity also drew criticism online, with one user remarking:
“His ego alone weighs 800 pounds. And he’s the most unfunny person that ever lived.”
Some observers expressed frustration with the $40 million spent on security measures for Trump, suggesting that his focus on appearance and image might be undermining his concern for safety:
“He wouldn’t be the first person to risk their life for vanity’s sake, but it’s hard to justify $40M of our money for a bulletproof ballroom when he clearly undervalues safety.”
