A tragic road accident in New Orleans has led to the arrest of a 53-year-old woman in connection with the death of a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Deputy.
The incident, which happened during a funeral procession last month, has deeply affected the local community. Police have now confirmed that an arrest warrant has been issued, and the accused has been booked into jail on a serious criminal charge.
Woman Booked on Vehicular Homicide Charge
According to jail records, authorities booked 53-year-old Erica Smythe Katsanis into the Orleans Parish jail on Wednesday afternoon. She has been charged with vehicular homicide under Louisiana law.
As per state law, vehicular homicide refers to the killing of a person caused directly by someone operating a motor vehicle. The law applies whether or not the driver intended to cause death. It also covers situations where the driver is found to be:
- Under the influence of alcohol
- Under the influence of drugs
- Impaired due to a combination of alcohol and drugs

Arrest Warrant Confirmed by NOPD
The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) confirmed that an arrest warrant had been issued in the case.
Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick spoke to the media and said the warrant had been presented to a magistrate and officially approved.

Deputy Christopher Ohlmeyer’s Death
The victim in the case was Christopher Ohlmeyer, a deputy with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office (JPSO).
The accident happened last month on Airline Highway in New Orleans. At the time of the crash, Deputy Ohlmeyer was helping manage traffic during a funeral procession. Police said he was blocking an intersection on his motorcycle to ensure the procession could pass safely.
According to earlier statements from NOPD, a vehicle crashed into the back of the deputy’s motorcycle, leading to his death.
Deputy Ohlmeyer had served in law enforcement for 16 years. He is survived by his wife and two children. His passing has left a deep impact on fellow officers, family members, and the local community.
