The release of more than three million pages of documents by the U.S. Department of Justice related to Jeffrey Epstein has created political shockwaves beyond America.
One of the first major political impacts has been seen in Slovakia, where a senior national security advisor has stepped down following public and political pressure linked to the documents.
Slovak Security Advisor Resigns After Document Release
Miroslav Lajčák, Slovakia’s National Security Advisor, submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Robert Fico after facing criticism from both opposition and coalition lawmakers. His position became difficult after documents released by U.S. authorities allegedly linked him to communications with Jeffrey Epstein.
Although Lajčák denied any criminal or unethical behaviour, he said he chose to resign to reduce political pressure on Prime Minister Fico. He told Slovak media that his decision was not an admission of wrongdoing.
Prime Minister Fico described Lajčák as a “great diplomat” and defended him against what he called unfair attacks.
Political Pressure From Coalition and Opposition
The situation became more serious when the Slovak National Party (SNS), which is part of Fico’s ruling coalition, joined opposition leaders in demanding Lajčák’s resignation. The party called him a “security risk.”
Reports suggest that Fico was given a clear warning that failing to act could signal tolerance of connections to individuals linked to serious sex crimes.
Fico strongly rejected the criticism, calling it hypocritical and politically motivated. However, the combined pressure from opposition and coalition partners made Lajčák’s resignation almost unavoidable.
What the Released Documents Allegedly Show
The documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice reportedly include messages between someone identified as “Miro Lajcak” and Jeffrey Epstein.
According to reports:
- Epstein allegedly offered young women to Lajčák.
- Some communications referenced meetings in Moscow.
- In one message, the women were described as “incredible.”
- Other exchanges suggested that the women were under 30.
There were also claims that Lajčák used Epstein as a contact to help arrange a meeting between Prime Minister Fico and Steve Bannon, a former advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump.
Additionally, the documents suggest that Lajčák may have shared details of meetings with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. These meetings reportedly focused on strengthening bilateral ties between Slovakia and Russia.
It is important to note that while these communications appear in the documents, no formal criminal charges have been announced against Lajčák.
Background on Jeffrey Epstein
Jeffrey Epstein was a convicted sex offender who was later accused of running a large-scale human trafficking operation involving underage girls. He died in August 2019 while in custody in New York, awaiting trial on federal charges.
Under U.S. law, a deceased person cannot be tried or convicted because they are unable to defend themselves in court. This is why he is legally described as an “accused” human trafficker in relation to some of the charges.
The recent release of documents has renewed global interest in his network of contacts and associates.
Fico’s Coalition Faces Fresh Instability
Prime Minister Robert Fico currently leads a fragile coalition government. His bloc holds 79 out of 150 seats in Parliament, giving him only a narrow majority.
The SNS, which holds eight seats, plays a key role in keeping the coalition in power. However, the party has often taken strong pro-Moscow positions and has created internal tensions within the government.
Earlier in 2025, Fico narrowly survived efforts to trigger a no-confidence vote. At that time, some lawmakers threatened to withdraw support unless changes were made within the cabinet. A reshuffle helped stabilise the government temporarily.
Recent polling data suggests that support for Fico’s party, SMER – Social Democracy, has declined since the 2023 general elections. If elections were held today, analysts believe the ruling coalition could lose its majority.
International and Political Impact
This controversy shows how the release of U.S. legal documents can have political consequences far beyond American borders. Even indirect references in high-profile investigations can affect reputations and political stability in other countries.
For Slovakia, the resignation adds pressure to an already unstable government. For the wider international community, it highlights how closely political leaders’ associations are being examined following the publication of Epstein-related files.
