A dramatic series of events across Louisiana has come to an end after authorities confirmed the death of a man who had recently escaped custody. The case, which quickly went viral online, involved a multi-parish police chase that ended in a deadly encounter.
Suspect Identified in Police Shooting
Michael Vavasseur, a 34-year-old from Duson, has been identified as the man killed during a police-involved shooting in Lafayette Parish on April 18, 2026. The confirmation came from Louisiana State Police.
His death follows several days of intense police activity and public attention.
Escape in Opelousas Sparks Viral Attention
The incident first gained attention when Vavasseur escaped from a transport vehicle in Opelousas earlier in the week. A video widely shared online appeared to show him running through traffic while still in shackles.
This unusual and risky escape quickly spread across social media, drawing concern and curiosity from the public.
Police Chase Across Multiple Areas
The situation escalated when officers in Scott attempted to stop a vehicle believed to be driven by Vavasseur. Instead of stopping, he fled, leading police on a chase through Lafayette Parish and into Carencro.
Multiple law enforcement agencies joined the pursuit as it moved across different areas, making it a coordinated effort to stop him.
Chase Turns Dangerous
During the chase, Vavasseur briefly stopped at a residence, where a passenger exited the vehicle and was taken into custody. He then continued to flee and nearly struck a police officer in Carencro.
An officer fired at the vehicle during this moment, but the suspect continued driving until crashing into a police unit on North Wilderness Trail.
Final Confrontation
After the crash, authorities say Vavasseur got out of the car with a firearm and tried to run. During the pursuit, he allegedly turned and fired at officers.
Police returned fire, and Vavasseur was shot. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.
K-9 Injured During Incident
During the exchange of gunfire, a K-9 unit from the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office was shot. The dog received medical treatment and is now reported to be in stable condition.
Thankfully, no officers were injured during the incident.
