The death of 41-year-old Marine Corps veteran Michael Garcia has left a New Orleans community grieving after he was fatally struck by gunfire while driving Tuesday afternoon.
Shooting Unfolds in Broad Daylight
Police responded to reports of gunfire near North Claiborne Avenue and Desire Street around 5 p.m. When officers arrived, they found Garcia slumped in his car with a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to a hospital but died about an hour later.
Investigators say Garcia was an innocent bystander caught in a shootout between two vehicles.
Arrest Made in Connection to Shooting
Authorities arrested 48-year-old Terrence Leavell and charged him with manslaughter and firearm-related offenses. A judge set his bond at $700,000.
Police say Leavell, a convicted felon who was on parole, was not legally allowed to possess a firearm. Investigators recovered a gun from his home.
Suspect Claims Self-Defense
According to police reports, Leavell told investigators he fired his weapon after a group in an SUV allegedly threatened his nephew. Witnesses described a chaotic scene with dozens of gunshots before one of the vehicles crashed into Garcia’s car.

Garcia’s girlfriend said he was simply driving to her home at the time of the shooting. His sudden death has left loved ones struggling to understand how such violence could take his life.
