John Fetterman said Wednesday that recent military actions ordered by Donald Trump in Iran have “made the world safer,” putting him at odds with several members of his own party.
Emphasis on Strength and Deterrence
Speaking in an interview on Fox News’ Hannity, Fetterman argued that Iran typically responds only to displays of force. He acknowledged the possibility of further escalation but said the strikes had significantly damaged Iran’s nuclear ambitions. He pointed to actions by Israel, including targeting nuclear scientists and facilities, as contributing to weakening Iran’s capabilities.
Claims of Improved Global Security
Fetterman said that despite concerns about remaining enriched uranium, the overall impact of the military actions has reduced the threat posed by Iran. He described the U.S. role as a force for stability and argued that the strikes have improved global security conditions.
Opposition to War Powers Vote
Fetterman also rejected calls from fellow Democrats for a new vote on war powers, saying such a move could disrupt ongoing military objectives. He stated he would vote against the measure, emphasizing the need to support U.S. forces as they carry out the mission referred to as “Epic Fury.”
Schumer and Democrats Push Back
Meanwhile, Chuck Schumer and other Senate Democrats have strongly criticized the strikes. Schumer warned that Iran still possesses nuclear material and argued that its ambitions may not have been fully contained. He also confirmed plans to push for a war powers resolution vote in the coming days.
Growing Divide Within the Party
The contrasting views highlight a widening divide among Democrats over the administration’s approach to Iran. While some, like Fetterman, support the military action as necessary, others have labeled the conflict a “war of choice” and raised concerns about escalation and congressional oversight.
