A shocking medical case from Florida has raised serious concerns about patient safety and accountability in healthcare. A former surgeon is now facing criminal charges after a surgery allegedly went terribly wrong, leading to the death of a patient.
What Happened in the Surgery
According to the Office of the State Attorney for the First Judicial Circuit, Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky has been charged with second-degree manslaughter.
The case involves 70-year-old Bill Bryan from Muscle Shoals, Alabama. In 2024, Bryan underwent what was supposed to be a routine laparoscopic splenectomy at Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital.
This type of procedure is normally done to remove the spleen using a minimally invasive method. However, prosecutors allege that instead of removing the spleen, the surgeon removed the patient’s liver.
Consequences of the Alleged Error
Authorities say the removal of the liver caused severe and uncontrollable blood loss. Sadly, Bryan died during the operation on the operating table.
A grand jury in Walton County later reviewed the case and determined that the surgeon’s actions could be considered criminal under Florida law.

Dr. Shaknovsky has been indicted and is currently being held at the Walton County Jail. If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison.

Following these incidents, his medical licenses in multiple states, including Florida, Alabama, and New York, were suspended between 2024 and 2025.
