A shocking murder case in Florida has revealed disturbing details about a secret relationship that ended in tragedy. Investigators say a birthday meeting between a woman and her alleged lover turned deadly, leading to a brutal killing and an attempt to hide the evidence.
The case has drawn attention because of the chilling investigation details, digital clues, and the disturbing way the victim’s body was discovered.
What Happened in the Florida Murder Case
A 38-year-old Florida man, Rene Perez, has been charged with first-degree murder and evidence tampering in connection with the death of Linda Campitelli, a 35-year-old woman from Palm Beach County.
Authorities say Campitelli’s body was discovered on October 28, 2024, around 11:15 p.m. on a road near her Chevrolet Tahoe.
Police reported that:
- The victim was lying in a pool of blood on the road.
- She had a large cut on the side of her head.
- There was heavy bruising around her eye.
- Her body had severe road rash, suggesting she had been dragged.
An autopsy later confirmed that Campitelli died from blunt force trauma to her head and torso.
Investigators also found that the backs of her heels were severely worn down, which experts say clearly shows she had been dragged along the road by a vehicle.
How Police Identified the Suspect
After discovering the body, deputies visited Campitelli’s home and spoke with her husband. He told investigators that his wife had planned to meet friends that evening.
However, when detectives contacted those friends, they learned something very different.
They revealed that Campitelli had been involved in a two-year extramarital affair with Rene Perez, who was a former coworker.
This information quickly made Perez a key suspect in the investigation.
Birthday Messages Before the Killing
Detectives later recovered WhatsApp messages between the victim and Perez.
The messages suggested the two had planned a birthday celebration together.
One message from Campitelli read:
“I love you. I feel kinda weird. I don’t know what to expect tomorrow. You’ve never done anything like this for me before and I feel a little nervous.”
Perez responded by telling her there was nothing to worry about and said he wanted to show that he could be romantic.
The two agreed to meet at 7:30 p.m. the next day.
Disturbing Scene Inside the SUV
Police also found a photo on the victim’s phone that appeared to show preparations for the birthday meeting.
Inside the Chevrolet Tahoe, investigators saw:
- The back seats folded down
- Hospital bed sheets covering the seats
- A birthday banner hanging from the ceiling that read:
“Happy Birthday – Hope your birthday is out of this world”
Phone data placed the victim in a dark parking lot near a medical facility, an area with very little foot traffic.
When detectives searched the SUV, they found blood spatter throughout the vehicle.
According to the affidavit:
- Blood had soaked through the speakers in the rear panel
- This suggested someone had been bleeding heavily inside the vehicle
Police believe the dragging injuries happened after Campitelli had already died.
Perez’s Statements Contradicted by Evidence
During questioning, Perez admitted he had been having an affair with Campitelli for about two years.
However, he told detectives he had cancelled their meeting because his son was sick.
Investigators found no message proving this claim.
His timeline also raised suspicion.
Perez told police he left work around 11 p.m., but surveillance footage showed something very different.
Video evidence showed:
- He left his workplace around 6:30 p.m.
- He drove away in his Honda Accord
- He returned just before midnight
Attempts to Hide Digital Evidence
Detectives believe Perez tried to cover his tracks.
According to investigators:
- He usually left his main phone at work so his wife couldn’t track him using the Life360 app
- He carried a second phone to communicate with Campitelli
Police were unable to recover messages between them, suggesting the messages may have been deleted.
Perez also told investigators he lost his phone, but surveillance footage from an AT&T store showed him holding the phone while buying a new one, which investigators say proves he lied.
Detectives also believe he disposed of the shoes he wore during the crime.
Vehicle Evidence Places Him at the Scene
Investigators were able to place Perez’s Honda near the medical center parking lot, the same location where Campitelli’s phone indicated she had been waiting.
Authorities believe the two met there in her Chevrolet Tahoe, where the violent attack likely took place.
Interestingly, the 26-page arrest affidavit does not state a clear motive for the killing.
Arrest and Current Case Status
Perez was arrested and taken to the Palm Beach County Jail, where he remains without bond.
His next court appearance is scheduled for April 9.
The case continues to move through the court system as prosecutors prepare their evidence.
Remembering Linda Campitelli
According to her obituary, Campitelli grew up in Miami and later worked as a nurse.
She married her husband in 2016, and the couple had two daughters together.
Her obituary described her as someone who loved life and adventure.
It said she was extremely intelligent with a near-photographic memory and enjoyed spending time with her family, friends, and planning outings and celebrations.
