A student-athlete from Texas A&M University–Texarkana tragically passed away Friday afternoon after a medical emergency during a track and field competition in Louisiana.
Texas A&M–Texarkana Student Dies After Collapse at Track Meet
Graycen Vargo, a 20-year-old junior computer science major, collapsed during an event at the Red River Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships, which were hosted by Xavier University in New Orleans.
University officials confirmed Vargo received immediate medical attention at the scene before being rushed to a local hospital, where he later died. No official cause of death has been released.
Vargo’s Background and Achievements
Vargo, who had joined the Eagles track and field team this year, was previously a runner at Jacksonville College. He graduated from Village Tech Schools in Duncanville and had recently earned the Eagle Excellence Award for cross country. This award honors student-athletes who exemplify strong character, academic success, and a positive influence both on and off campus.
Statements from University Officials
In a statement, Ross Alexander expressed condolences to Vargo’s family and teammates, calling his loss “unimaginable.” He described Vargo as a respected and beloved member of the university community who will be greatly missed.
Athletics Director Ryan Wall also shared his sorrow, offering heartfelt condolences on behalf of the athletic department and saying the department is grieving with Vargo’s loved ones.

The university has announced that counseling services will be available to support students and staff during this difficult time, helping them cope with the loss of the young student-athlete.
