A Pennsylvania couple is facing serious criminal charges after police accused them of physically abusing their 4-month-old baby boy. Investigators say the infant was taken to a hospital covered in bruises and suffering from a split lip, leading doctors to suspect possible child ab*se.
The disturbing case has shocked the local community in Lancaster County, where authorities say both parents later admitted to actions that may have caused the child’s injuries.
According to police, the baby was found with bruises and abrasions across different parts of his body. Medical staff at UPMC Lititz Hospital reportedly contacted the Northern Lancaster County Regional Police Department after noticing suspicious injuries on the infant.
How the Investigation Began
The investigation started on April 22, 2026, after hospital staff alerted police about the condition of the child. Authorities said the 4-month-old boy had visible bruising from head to toe along with a split lip and injuries inside his mouth.
Medical professionals reportedly identified several injuries, including a lip laceration, bruising, abrasions, and damage to the upper frenulum, which is the tissue connecting the upper lip to the gums.
Due to the seriousness of the injuries, detectives immediately began questioning the child’s parents, Jessica Oster and James Oster.
What Jessica Oster Told Police
According to charging documents, 26-year-old Jessica Oster initially told investigators that she had placed a bottle in the baby’s mouth before leaving him alone for around 20 to 30 minutes.
She later claimed she returned and discovered the child’s lip injured.
However, police say Jessica later admitted she became frustrated with the baby crying and used excessive force while pushing the bottle into the infant’s mouth.
Investigators believe this action caused the child’s split lip and injuries inside the mouth.
Police also questioned Jessica about the bruises found on the child’s body. She reportedly suggested they may have happened while the baby was being bathed by his father or while sitting in a bouncy seat.
According to investigators, the couple often left the child alone in the seat with a bottle supported by a blanket while they stayed in another room.
When detectives examined the bouncy seat, they reportedly found a strong smell of urine along with urine stains soaked through the seat.
What James Oster Allegedly Admitted
The child’s father, James Oster, also allegedly confessed to actions that investigators believe caused injuries to the infant.
According to police, James admitted that while bathing the baby, he gripped the child’s head tightly and pulled it backward to stop him from slipping underwater.
Investigators believe the force used during bathing may have caused bruising found on the child’s body.
Police said both parents’ statements became important evidence in the investigation.
Charges Filed Against the Parents
As a result of the investigation, both parents now face multiple criminal charges connected to the alleged ab*se.
Jessica Oster was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, endangering the welfare of children, and recklessly endangering another person.
James Oster was also charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, endangering the welfare of children, and recklessly endangering another person.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed who currently has custody of the child. Questions regarding the baby’s placement were reportedly referred to Lancaster County Children & Youth Agency.
