Golden Knights Can’t Stop Bleeding, Fall to Wild on Deadline Day

The Vegas Golden Knights ran into a familiar problem Friday night — once they allowed a goal, the momentum quickly shifted the other way. The Minnesota Wild took advantage of a short but decisive stretch in the second period to secure a 4-2 victory at T-Mobile Arena.

A three-goal burst by Minnesota in just over three minutes proved too much for Vegas to overcome, despite a strong push late in the game.

Even First Period Sets the Stage

The opening period was tightly contested.

Vegas controlled much of the play early, outshooting Minnesota 8-6 and successfully killing off a Wild power play.

Forward Colton Sissons had two breakaway chances but was denied both times by Wild goaltender Filip Gustavsson, who kept the game scoreless heading into the second period.

Wild’s Three-Goal Burst Changes the Game

The turning point came early in the second period.

At 5:18, Minnesota opened the scoring after Mats Zuccarello raced to a loose puck and finished a breakaway opportunity.

The Wild doubled their lead at 8:25 when Danial Yurov fired a one-timer that was initially stopped by Vegas goalie Akira Schmid, but the rebound bounced to Zach Bogosian, who blasted it into the net.

Just 18 seconds later, Minnesota struck again. A point shot from Brock Faber was redirected by Michael McCarron to make it 3-0.

That three-goal run occurred within a 3:07 span, quickly putting Vegas in a deep hole.

Golden Knights Fight Back

Despite trailing, the Golden Knights continued to generate offense.

Their breakthrough came early in the third period when Pavel Dorofeyev scored his 30th goal of the season on a power play after a pass from Jack Eichel.

The goal energized Vegas, which dominated much of the third period offensively.

The Golden Knights recorded:

  • 14 shots on goal
  • 13 scoring chances

However, Gustavsson continued to make key saves to maintain Minnesota’s lead.

Wild Seal the Victory

Minnesota regained a two-goal advantage late in the game.

Vladimir Tarasenko finished a 3-on-1 rush with help from Yakov Trenin and Jared Spurgeon, slipping a shot past Schmid at 15:42 of the third period.

Vegas responded with another goal when Tomáš Hertl forced a turnover that led to a quick scoring play. Dorofeyev fed a pass to Mitch Marner, who redirected it into the net with just over three minutes remaining.

Still, the Golden Knights couldn’t generate enough chances after pulling Schmid for an extra attacker.

Cassidy Frustrated With Repeated Pattern

Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy acknowledged that the team’s struggles after giving up goals have been a recurring issue this season.

“It’s a lot of the same,” Cassidy said after the game. “We get behind. We have a bad stretch, and one becomes two becomes three.”

With a veteran roster expected to handle adversity better, Cassidy believes the team must find a way to avoid these quick collapses moving forward.
