An armed man was shot and killed by the Secret Service after opening fire at a White House checkpoint Saturday evening.
Gunman Killed by Secret Service
The incident occurred around 6 p.m. near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. The man allegedly walked up to the checkpoint, removed a weapon from a bag, and fired at officers. Secret Service agents returned fire, striking the suspect. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
Bystander Injured
A bystander was also struck by gunfire, though it is unclear whether it happened during the suspect’s initial attack or the exchange of fire. No Secret Service officers were injured. The condition of the bystander has not been released.
President Trump Comments
President Donald Trump praised law enforcement for their swift response:
“Thank you to our great Secret Service and Law Enforcement for the swift and professional action… The gunman is dead after an exchange of gunfire near the White House gates.”
He also noted the importance of secure protection for future Presidents.
About the Suspect
Officials told ABC News the alleged gunman was a 21-year-old known to the Secret Service. Court records show:
- He had a stay-away order from the White House issued on July 11, 2025.
- He was arrested the day before the shooting after trying to get past a White House security checkpoint.
- He reportedly told officers he was “Jesus Christ” and wanted to be arrested.
- He had previously been involuntarily committed on June 26, 2025.
White House Response
At the time of the shooting, President Trump was in the Oval Office with aides Steven Cheung, Natalie Harp, and Margo Martin.
Reporters, including ABC News’ Selina Wang, were filming nearby when gunshots rang out and were instructed to take cover. They ran into the White House Press Briefing Room for safety.
FBI Director Kash Patel said the agency was on scene assisting the Secret Service and will provide updates as available.
Investigation
The incident is still under investigation by the Secret Service and federal authorities.
