Authorities in California are searching for a driver involved in a tragic hit-and-run crash that killed a 22-year-old man on Interstate 5. The victim was reportedly changing a tire on the side of the highway when a tractor-trailer struck him and his vehicle. The incident happened just feet away from his girlfriend, who witnessed the devastating moment.
Man Killed While Changing Tire on California Freeway
The fatal crash happened around 11:20 p.m. on Friday on southbound Interstate 5, just south of Templin Highway in Castaic, approximately 60 miles north of Los Angeles.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a young man had pulled his vehicle to the side of the freeway after experiencing a flat tire.
While attempting to change the tire, a tractor-trailer reportedly crashed into both the man and the vehicle.
Authorities later identified the victim as 22-year-old Alejandro Covarrubias.
Girlfriend Witnessed the Tragic Incident
Covarrubias was not alone at the time of the crash. His girlfriend was nearby when the accident occurred and saw the entire incident unfold.
According to his sister, Ana Iscoa, the couple had stopped on the side of the road so he could fix the flat tire.
While he was working on the vehicle, the tractor-trailer struck him. His girlfriend was standing just a few feet away when it happened.
Iscoa said the experience was incredibly traumatic for her brother’s girlfriend but added that the family is grateful he was not alone during his final moments.
She told local media that Covarrubias reached out his hand toward his girlfriend during the incident.
Family Already Grieving Another Loss
The tragedy comes during an already painful time for the family.
Iscoa said their mother passed away eight months earlier due to a brain aneurysm, making the loss even more difficult.
Family members are now hoping authorities will find the driver responsible for the crash.
They say they want justice for Covarrubias and answers about what happened that night.
Victim Remembered as Kind and Caring
Family and friends have been sharing memories of Covarrubias online and through a GoFundMe created in his honor.
His sister described him as someone who touched many lives despite his young age.
According to the fundraising page, Covarrubias worked as a caregiver for elderly individuals, dedicating his time to helping others.
His family described him as a devoted son, brother, boyfriend, cousin, nephew, grandson, and godfather who always put other people first.
They remembered him as a joyful and caring person who brought positivity to those around him.
Authorities Searching for Tractor-Trailer Driver
Investigators are still working to identify and locate the truck driver involved in the crash.
According to officials, the tractor-trailer may have had an Amazon decal on it, but authorities are still trying to confirm that detail.
The driver reportedly left the scene after the collision, and the investigation remains ongoing.
