Suspect Dies After Police Chase
Shamar Elkins died early Sunday morning after leading Shreveport police on a chase that ended in Bossier City. Officers located him around 6:30 a.m. in a residential area on Brompton Lane.
An exchange of gunfire followed shortly after police made contact. Elkins was pronounced dead at around 7:03 a.m. However, officials have not yet confirmed whether he died from police gunfire or from a self-inflicted injury.
Homeowner Shares What Happened
The homeowner where the incident ended, Michael Mayence, shared details about the encounter. He said he knew Elkins from years ago and had even served with him in the U.S. Army.
According to Mayence, Elkins came to his home possibly looking for help or a safe place. He recognised Elkins’ voice when he arrived at the door. Their conversation reportedly lasted less than a minute.
Mayence claimed that during this brief moment, Elkins put a gun to his mouth and fired. He also said police then responded by shooting during the confrontation.
Police Still Investigating Cause of Death
Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith confirmed that officers discharged their weapons during the incident. However, he stated that it is still unclear what exactly caused Elkins’ death.
The Louisiana State Police are now leading the investigation to determine the full sequence of events and the exact cause of death.

Elkins had previously served in the Louisiana National Guard from 2013 to 2020. According to family members, he had been dealing with mental health issues and personal problems, including domestic conflicts.
