A tragic case in West Virginia has shaken the community after the remains of 16-year-old Shayln Harvey were found at her family home in Big Chimney. Authorities continue to investigate her death as a potential homicide.
Discovery of Shayln Harvey’s Remains
Shayln Harvey was reported missing on May 4, 2026, two days after she was last seen in the Big Chimney area. Police initially noted that she may have entered a blue Dodge Ram pickup truck from the early 2000s.
On Friday, human remains were recovered from the home where Shayln lived with her mother and stepfather, James Truman, 52. The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the remains belonged to Shayln after an autopsy was completed. Authorities have not yet released a cause of death.
Stepfather in Custody on Separate Charges
James Truman was arrested on May 8, days after Shayln was reported missing. He faces charges of incest and s**ual abuse by a parent, guardian, or person in a position of trust. These charges stem from an alleged incident around April 15, 2026.
Truman has not been charged in connection with Shayln’s death. He is currently held at Kanawha County Jail on a $100,000 cash bond, and his case has been sent to Kanawha County Circuit Court. His next court date has not been made public.

Law enforcement officials are continuing their investigation into Shayln’s death. The sheriff’s office has confirmed that the case is being treated as a homicide, though further details remain under review. Authorities executed a search warrant at the residence where Shayln lived as part of their investigation.
