A deeply emotional and violent incident in South Carolina has ended with a long prison sentence, highlighting how personal conflicts can spiral into tragic outcomes. What began as a family dispute over paternity turned into a shocking act of violence in a place meant for justice and resolution.
Incident Outside Courthouse Turns Fatal
In August 2024, a hearing took place at the Laurens County Courthouse involving a child connected to Stephen “Andrew” White, his wife, and Erin Lee Thomas. According to prosecutors, the hearing itself was calm, and there were no major arguments inside the courtroom.
After the hearing ended, all three individuals went their separate ways. However, what happened next took a tragic turn. Authorities say White got into his car and drove directly toward Thomas, hitting him and causing serious injuries, including a broken leg.
Violence Escalates in Parking Lot
After running him over, White reportedly took a gun from a diaper bag and tried to shoot Thomas while he was lying on the ground. At first, the weapon jammed, but he managed to fix it and then fired, killing Thomas.
Police say Thomas was unable to escape due to his injuries, making the situation even more serious. After the shooting, White surrendered to authorities at the scene.
Motive Linked to Personal Discovery
During the court proceedings, White’s lawyer explained that the incident was driven by emotional distress. White had recently learned that he was not the biological father of a child he believed was his.
According to the defence, his wife had an earlier relationship with Thomas before their marriage and later admitted to it. However, it was revealed that the relationship had continued, and the child was actually Thomas’s.
The lawyer argued that this information deeply affected White and led to a moment where he “snapped.”
Prosecution Highlights Premeditation
Prosecutors presented a different view, stating that White had known about the child’s paternity for nearly a year before the incident. This suggested that the act was not sudden but rather planned or at least not entirely impulsive.
They also emphasised that the victim was already injured and unable to defend himself when he was shot, which made the crime more severe.
Court Sentence and Legal Outcome
Stephen “Andrew” White pleaded guilty to murder and possession of a firearm during a crime. The court sentenced him to 40 years in prison.
The judge’s decision reflected the seriousness of the act and the circumstances under which it happened, especially considering that the crime took place outside a courthouse, a place meant for resolving disputes peacefully.
Family’s Emotional Loss
The victim, Erin Lee Thomas, was remembered by his family as a caring and dedicated father. During the sentencing, his grandmother spoke about how important fatherhood was to him and how much he loved his child.
She shared that he had even supported White and his wife financially to help provide a better life for his daughter. Her words highlighted the emotional pain and sense of injustice felt by the family.
