A tragic incident has shaken New Jersey, where a man allegedly killed his wife with a barbell. Michael A. Kless, 67, is accused of murdering his wife of nearly 40 years, Stacy E. Kless, 66. Authorities say he acted out of a “long-simmering hatred” and was having an affair with a woman from Central America.
Details of the Murder
Police responded to a home on the 100 block of Seward Drive in Ocean Township around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday after receiving calls reporting a murder. Officers found Stacy Kless “obviously deceased” inside the house.
Michael Kless was later found unconscious in his vehicle at a rest stop off the Garden State Parkway. He was rushed to a hospital and is reported to be in critical condition.
Suspect’s Confession
According to a probable cause arrest warrant obtained by the Asbury Park Press, Michael Kless admitted to killing his wife in messages sent to their two adult children. He also emailed another person, describing the murder in detail. The email reportedly mentioned his “long-simmering hatred” for his wife and his affair with a woman from Central America.
He allegedly told his children that he planned to take his own life by ingesting prescription pills.
Earlier Signs at the House
About half an hour before police were called, a work crew arrived for a scheduled repair. Michael Kless answered the door with a scratch on his face and asked them to reschedule the work, according to the affidavit.
Community Reaction
Ocean Township Mayor John P. Napolitani Sr. told the Asbury Park Press that the murder has left the community “blindsided.” The couple had been married 39 years and had grandchildren.
“Nobody saw this coming,” Mayor Napolitani said. “There was not a clue this was going to happen.”
Charges and Investigation
Michael Kless has been charged with first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Police continue to investigate the case to understand the full circumstances behind the murder.
