A 24-year-old man in Maine is facing a murder charge after his girlfriend was fatally shot earlier this month, in a case that investigators say may involve a history of abuse.
Authorities with the Maine State Police identified the suspect as Austin Doucette. The victim, Mikayla Rose DeSantis, was 23 years old.
What Happened the Night of the Shooting
The incident occurred on March 8 at a condominium complex in Carrabassett Valley, about 120 miles north of Portland.
Police say DeSantis was shot in the chest and initially transported by Doucette in his own vehicle before paramedics took over. She was airlifted to Maine Medical Center, where she later died from her injuries.
During multiple 911 calls, Doucette allegedly sounded “hysterical,” repeatedly expressing shock and claiming the shooting was accidental.
Evidence and Investigation
Officers later found evidence inside Doucette’s vehicle, including what appeared to be bloodstains. Investigators also recovered items believed to belong to the victim.
During questioning, Doucette told police the gun used in the shooting — reportedly a .45-caliber firearm — was still inside the condo. He later invoked his right to remain silent.
Allegations of Abuse Surface
Newly revealed court documents suggest the relationship may have been troubled.
Friends, co-workers, and a manager from the Sugarloaf Mountain — where both worked — told investigators that Doucette allegedly displayed controlling and abusive behavior.
Witnesses described instances of verbal harassment, threats, and physical aggression, including alleged pushing and grabbing. Some said DeSantis downplayed the incidents.
One account claimed she tried to schedule work shifts to avoid being home with him.
Additional 911 Call Raises Concerns
A separate 911 call from a family acquaintance alleged that Doucette had said something had happened to DeSantis and that he was considering harming himself.
Police later located and stopped him.
Cause of Death Confirmed
An autopsy conducted by the state medical examiner determined DeSantis died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Doucette remains charged with murder as the investigation continues. Authorities are working to piece together the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
