75-Year-Old Man Pleads Not Guilty in Fatal 2025 Hunting Property Shooting
A 75-year-old man, Brent Hofman, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and attempted murder in connection with the 2025 shooting of his friend at a hunting property in Wisconsin.
Details of the Shooting
According to reports from Law & Crime, Hofman was drinking whiskey with two friends in a garage on November 14, 2025. The two other men, 67-year-old Ricky Roundy and another man identified only as Victim #2, knew Hofman through the hunting property they all used.
Victim #2 described Hofman as “a bit weird” and “a hermit sort of dude.” On the night of the shooting, Hofman allegedly pulled out a pistol and said, “I hope you’ll excuse me if I have to kill you guys,” before opening fire. Roundy was struck and later died from his injuries.
Self-Defense and Police Response
Victim #2 fled the garage and locked himself in a building on the property, arming himself with a rifle for protection. He called 911 and told dispatchers that Hofman was trying to kill him. In a confrontation, Victim #2 fired through a glass door in self-defense, striking Hofman in the face.
When police arrived, Hofman was reportedly very intoxicated and was taken into custody. He allegedly told a deputy at the scene that he loved him. Hofman was then treated at a hospital for his injuries before being booked into jail.
Statements from Authorities
Shawano County District Attorney Gregory Parker described the case as a “killing in cold blood,” highlighting the seriousness of the charges.
On May 21, Hofman entered a not guilty plea. He is scheduled to appear in court again on July 8 for a status conference. Each charge carries an automatic life sentence with the possibility of parole after 20 years if he is convicted.
Current Status
Hofman remains in jail on a $1 million cash bond, as reported by local news outlets. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the shooting and gather evidence in preparation for trial.
