A Montana man is in custody after a bar fight ended in a fatal shooting in downtown Bozeman late at night.
The Arrest
Jakob Steven Lundberg, 22, faces charges of deliberate homicide, criminal endangerment, and tampering with evidence, according to the Bozeman Police Department. The victim, 29-year-old Sidney Callaghan, died as a result of the shooting.
Lundberg was arrested near a local Walmart after witnesses provided a description of his red Subaru WRX. His bond was set at $1.5 million, and he remains detained at the Gallatin County Detention Facility.
What Happened
The incident occurred during the early morning hours of May 25 at the Rocking R Bar in downtown Bozeman. According to police affidavits, Lundberg and Callaghan got into a fight inside the bar. Staff intervened and escorted the two men outside, but the fight continued.
Lundberg then walked to his Subaru, retrieved a firearm, and returned to confront Callaghan. Police reports described the shooting in detail:
“(Lundberg) pushes out his hands in an ‘isosceles’ shooting stance and aims a handgun at Callaghan. He lowers the weapon, walks closer, raises it again, and shoots Callaghan, who falls to the ground.” – Detective Kyle Hodges, Bozeman Police
After shooting Callaghan several times, Lundberg left the scene just before 1 a.m.
Response and Investigation
First responders rushed Callaghan to Bozeman Deaconess Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Surveillance footage confirmed the shooting took place in a crowded area with bystanders nearby, including pedestrians and patrons of adjacent businesses.
Witnesses helped law enforcement identify Lundberg’s vehicle. The defendant later contacted his father, admitting, “I shot somebody.” Police also recovered the weapon the next day with the help of a K9 trained to detect firearms.
Lundberg allegedly admitted little beyond expressing regret for his actions. Authorities are still reviewing evidence and expect formal charges to be filed in the coming weeks.
Community Reaction
Gallatin County Attorney Audrey Cromwell called the shooting “devastating” and emphasized that her office will work closely with law enforcement to ensure a thorough investigation.
“Violence of this magnitude in the heart of our community is devastating. Our office will continue working closely with law enforcement to ensure a thorough review of the evidence and to seek justice for Sidney,” she said.
