Spanish authorities have recovered the body of James Gracey, a 20-year-old University of Alabama student, from the Mediterranean Sea near Barcelona, where he went missing during spring break. The authorities confirmed that the body belonged to Gracey, who was from Elmhurst, Illinois, and said the cause of death appeared to be an accident, not a criminal act.

The Disappearance and Search Efforts

James Gracey, also known as Jimmy, was last seen leaving the Shôko nightclub near Port Olímpic around 3 a.m. on Tuesday. He had been in Barcelona visiting friends who were studying abroad.

The nightmare began when Gracey got separated from his group of friends inside the popular nightclub. His friends reported him missing after he failed to return to their Airbnb, which was about two miles away.

On Wednesday, authorities found Gracey’s wallet floating near Somorrostro beach, which is just a short distance from the nightclub. His phone was also recovered, adding to the mystery surrounding his disappearance. For a time, authorities suspected foul play might be involved, but after further investigation, they concluded it was likely an accident.

Heartbreaking Discovery

On Thursday afternoon, police found a “lifeless body” about 13 feet deep in the water near the club. The body was later identified as James Gracey’s. The discovery came just hours after the Gracey family expressed their gratitude to the public for their support during this difficult time.

“We are so grateful for the kindness and concern that has been shown for our family during this incredibly difficult time,” the family said in a statement. They also requested privacy, saying they would not be giving interviews at this time to focus on being together and supporting one another.

Support from Friends and Family

Gracey’s friends and fraternity brothers had been holding on to hope that he would be found safe. One of his fraternity brothers, Cavin McLay, spoke about how Gracey had been a mentor to others in the fraternity, guiding them in their faith.

“It’s tough. We’re doing everything we can to keep our heads up and remain hopeful that we find him safe, but it’s a tough time. And, you know, we’re scared,” McLay said. He described Gracey as a “kind, responsible, and devoted son and brother.”
