John E. Rich III, 68, has been formally charged with first-degree murder in the death of his 38-year-old stepson, Richard Lease. The shooting happened on the night of January 7 at their home in Booneville, Arkansas.
The Logan County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting at the residence. When deputies arrived, they found Lease dead with multiple gunshot wounds. Rich was still at the scene along with a rifle and was arrested without any resistance.
Argument Led to Deadly Violence
According to court documents, Rich and Lease had a verbal argument earlier that day. After the heated exchange, Lease reportedly went back to his bedroom.
Investigators say Rich then retrieved an AK-style rifle. He allegedly walked to Lease’s bedroom, opened the door, and fired several shots at him.
Police reports state that Rich later admitted to entering the bedroom with a loaded firearm and shooting his stepson multiple times.
