A tragic family dispute in Arkansas has ended in a murder charge after a man allegedly shot his own stepson inside their shared home. According to police reports, the accused told officers he was “tired” of his stepson stealing from him, which led to the deadly incident.
Fatal Shooting in Booneville, Arkansas
John E. Rich III, 68, has been formally charged with first-degree murder in the death of his 38-year-old stepson, Richard Lease. The shooting happened on the night of January 7 at their home in Booneville, Arkansas.
The Logan County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting at the residence. When deputies arrived, they found Lease dead with multiple gunshot wounds. Rich was still at the scene along with a rifle and was arrested without any resistance.
Argument Led to Deadly Violence
According to court documents, Rich and Lease had a verbal argument earlier that day. After the heated exchange, Lease reportedly went back to his bedroom.
Investigators say Rich then retrieved an AK-style rifle. He allegedly walked to Lease’s bedroom, opened the door, and fired several shots at him.
Police reports state that Rich later admitted to entering the bedroom with a loaded firearm and shooting his stepson multiple times.
Alleged Motive Behind the Shooting
When questioned by authorities about the conflict, Rich reportedly told officers he was “tired of Richard stealing tools and money” from him.
He also allegedly said he “just wanted him out” of the house. However, instead of seeking legal or peaceful solutions, police say he chose to confront his stepson with a weapon.
Officials have not shared further details about whether there had been previous complaints or police reports related to theft between the two.
Charges and Current Legal Status
Rich is currently being held at the Logan County Detention Center. His bond has been set at $1 million.
He is scheduled to appear in court for his arraignment on March 6. If convicted of first-degree murder, he could face a life sentence under Arkansas law.
Community Shock and Legal Process Ahead
Incidents involving family members often leave communities shaken, especially when they end in violence. What started as an argument between a stepfather and stepson has now turned into a serious criminal case.
As the legal process moves forward, the court will examine the evidence, including Rich’s alleged statements and the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The case serves as a reminder of how unresolved anger and conflict can quickly escalate into irreversible consequences.
