A new political dispute has emerged in Congress after allegations of sexual misconduct were made against a California lawmaker. The situation escalated when a Republican representative announced plans to seek his expulsion from office.
Expulsion Effort Announced
Anna Paulina Luna, a Republican from Florida, said she plans to file a motion to expel Eric Swalwell from Congress.
She made the announcement on social media, stating her intent to pursue the most serious disciplinary action available in the House of Representatives.
Allegations Against Swalwell
The move follows allegations from a former staffer who accused Swalwell of sexually assaulting her on two occasions when she said she was too intoxicated to consent.
Additional reports cited claims from other women who alleged the congressman sent inappropriate messages and explicit images.
Swalwell’s Response
Swalwell has strongly denied the allegations, calling them completely false.
In a public statement, he said the incidents described never occurred and suggested the timing of the accusations was linked to his campaign for governor of California.
What Expulsion Means
Expulsion is the most severe penalty Congress can impose on one of its members. It requires a two-thirds majority vote in the House.
Historically, only a small number of lawmakers have been expelled, including George Santos, who was removed after an ethics investigation found significant misconduct.
Luna’s Broader Actions
Luna has been active in pushing accountability measures in Congress. She previously worked with lawmakers from both parties on legislation related to transparency around cases involving Jeffrey Epstein.
She has also called for action against other members, including Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who faced ethics violation findings, and Tony Gonzales, over separate misconduct allegations.
Ongoing Developments
The situation remains fluid as responses from lawmakers continue and any formal expulsion effort would require significant support in the House.
Swalwell’s office has not publicly addressed the latest push for his removal beyond his earlier denial of the allegations.
