Mackenzie Shirilla, the teenager who deliberately killed her boyfriend and a friend in a high-speed car crash, had ominously warned her boyfriend she would die for him two years before the tragedy.

Shocking Text Messages

In 2020, Shirilla sent a text to Dominic Russo during an argument, telling him to treat the girl who would die for him better. The text surfaced as part of a release of 32,000 messages by the Strongsville Police Department in Ohio.

The messages revealed a disturbing pattern of reckless and violent behaviour. In some texts, Shirilla wrote about wanting to harm herself, including statements about banging her head against a wall. In March 2022, Russo reported that she had hit him and attempted to throw a rock at him, and warned her about driving dangerously.

The Fatal Crash

Four months later, in July 2022, Russo, 20, and the couple’s friend Davion Flanagan, 19, were killed when Shirilla, then 17, intentionally accelerated her Toyota Camry to 100 mph. The car jumped a curb and crashed into a brick warehouse. Russo was in the passenger seat, and Flanagan was in the back seat. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Shirilla was found unconscious with her foot still on the accelerator. When she regained consciousness in the hospital, medical professionals noted that she displayed grief, guilt, and shame.

Court Case and Conviction

Prosecutors argued that the crash was deliberate, motivated by Shirilla’s anger after Russo repeatedly tried to end their tumultuous relationship. She was convicted in 2023 of murdering Russo and Flanagan and is serving two concurrent sentences of 15 years to life.

A judge described Shirilla as “literal hell on wheels” during her conviction. She is currently appealing her conviction for the second time.

Public Attention

The case has drawn national attention and is the subject of the Netflix documentary “The Crash,” which explores the events leading up to the fatal accident and the psychological profile of Shirilla.
