A disturbing case in eastern France has come to light after a 9-year-old boy was discovered living in extreme conditions inside a van, where he had allegedly been confined for an extended period. The discovery has led to criminal charges and raised serious concerns about child welfare.
Discovery of the Child
The boy was found in the village of Hagenbach after a neighbor reported hearing sounds coming from a parked utility van.
When officers forced the vehicle open, they discovered the child lying in a fetal position, naked and covered with a blanket, surrounded by trash and human waste. Authorities said he appeared severely malnourished and had difficulty walking after being confined for so long.
Condition and Statements
The child told authorities he had not bathed in a long period and had been living in those conditions for an extended time.
He was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment and evaluation.
Father’s Arrest and Claims
The boy’s father has been charged with kidnapping. According to prosecutor Nicolas Heitz, the father claimed he confined his son to protect him from his partner, who he said wanted to place the child in a psychiatric facility.
However, authorities found no evidence supporting claims that the boy had any psychiatric condition. Reports indicated that he had been performing well in school before his disappearance.
Family and Investigation
When the boy stopped attending school, teachers were told he had transferred elsewhere. Family members and acquaintances believed he had been placed in a psychiatric hospital.
The father’s partner, who denied knowing about the confinement, has also been charged for failing to assist a minor in danger.
Current Situation
The boy remains in medical care, while his siblings — including a 12-year-old sister and another child in the household — have been placed under social services.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to understand how the situation went undetected for so long and determine the full circumstances surrounding the case.
