A violent confrontation between anti-ICE protesters and New York City police unfolded outside a Brooklyn hospital early Sunday morning after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested a man and brought him to the hospital for treatment. The incident, which led to multiple arrests, has drawn sharp criticism from Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who condemned ICE as “cruel and inhumane.”
Chaos Erupts as Protesters Block Hospital Entrances
The chaotic scene began late on Saturday night when ICE arrested a man and transported him to a hospital for medical care. Protesters, rallying against ICE’s actions, gathered outside the hospital to prevent the federal agents from leaving. Witnesses say the crowd blocked emergency entrances, threw debris into the street, and disrupted traffic.
Around 2 a.m. Sunday, as ICE agents were leaving with the arrested individual, tensions reached a boiling point. Pepper spray was used by ICE agents as protesters surrounded the SUV, with some demonstrators reportedly being hit by the spray. The SUV then sped away, but not before the confrontation had escalated.
Violent Confrontation Between Protesters and Police
Amid the chaos, a physical scuffle broke out between a police officer and a protester, escalating into a full-blown brawl. Protesters and police officers were seen tackling and swinging at each other in a violent struggle. The NYPD eventually took control of the situation, but not before at least nine people were arrested during the confrontation.
Accusations of NYPD Collusion With ICE
New York City Councilmember Sandy Nurse accused the NYPD of violating the city’s sanctuary city laws by coordinating with ICE during the incident. Nurse claimed that NYPD officers allowed ICE’s vehicle to move through the crowd, despite the city’s policy of limiting cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.
In a statement, Nurse said:
“It appeared to be direct coordination between ICE and the NYPD… with officers cordoning off the ambulance bay to allow ICE to move the individual into their vehicle and leave.”
The NYPD, however, denied any collaboration with ICE, stating that their officers were only at the scene to maintain public order and had not assisted in ICE’s operations.
Mayor Mamdani Responds
Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed his outrage over the incident, labeling ICE’s actions as “cruel and inhumane.” He reinforced his stance on the federal agency, saying it does not contribute to public safety. Mamdani, who was participating in the Five Boro Bike Tour at the time, said:
“They do nothing to serve in the interest of public safety… I’ve said that even directly to the president.”
Footage and Public Reaction
Footage from the scene shared on social media shows protesters yelling at police, hauling trash cans into the street, and engaging in verbal and physical confrontations with officers. The violent outburst has sparked heated debate over the role of federal immigration enforcement in New York City and the actions of both ICE and local police.
