A deeply disturbing case from New York has come to light, where an elderly woman reportedly died after being left without proper care in extremely poor living conditions. The situation has shocked many people, especially because the person accused is her own son, who was supposed to take care of her during her final days.
What Happened in This Case
According to the New York State Police, Joseph Polizzi, a 64-year-old man, has been charged in connection with the death of his 89-year-old mother, Nancy Polizzi. Authorities say she was found dead inside a shed on their property in Carlisle, a small town in upstate New York.
Police reached the property on February 23, 2025, after receiving a report about an unattended death. When officers arrived, they discovered Nancy’s body inside the shed, which reportedly had no heat or running water.
Living Conditions Inside the Shed
Investigators later found that Nancy had been living in that shed since August 2024. The conditions were extremely poor and not suitable for any person, especially someone elderly and dependent on care.
Some key issues with the shed included:
- No heating, even during freezing winter months
- No access to running water
- Lack of basic hygiene and medical support
Reports also showed that temperatures in the area dropped as low as 4°F (around -15°C) in February 2025, making the situation even more dangerous.
Cause of Death Revealed
An autopsy was conducted to determine the exact cause of Nancy Polizzi’s death. Doctors found that she died from sepsis, which developed due to untreated bedsores.
Bedsores, also known as pressure ulcers, occur when a person stays in one position for too long without proper care. In this case, the condition had worsened severely and turned gangrenous, meaning the tissue had died due to lack of treatment.
The medical examiner officially ruled the death as a homicide, pointing to serious neglect.
Role of the Son as Caretaker
Investigators revealed that Joseph Polizzi was his mother’s primary caretaker. In the weeks before her death, Nancy was unable to:
- Walk
- Feed herself
- Speak
Despite her condition, authorities allege that he failed to provide proper care or seek medical help. This lack of action is believed to have directly led to her death.
Charges and Arrest
Joseph Polizzi has now been charged with:
- Criminally negligent homicide
- Endangering the welfare of a vulnerable elderly person
He was arrested at his home and taken into custody. He is currently being held at the Schoharie County Correctional Facility.
The court has set his bail at:
- $5,000 cash
- $10,000 bond
- $50,000 partially secured bond
Why This Case Matters
This case highlights the serious responsibility of caring for elderly family members, especially those who are fully dependent on others. Neglecting such care can lead not only to tragic outcomes but also to criminal charges.
It also raises awareness about elder abuse and neglect, which often go unnoticed until it is too late. Communities and authorities must stay alert and take action if they suspect someone is not receiving proper care.
