A 30-year-old man, Alexander Diaz Mendoza, is facing charges after allegedly causing the death of a pregnant woman’s unborn child in a drunk driving crash in San Antonio, Texas.
Mendoza is accused of running a red light while under the influence of alcohol, leading to the woman going into premature labor and miscarrying.
Drunk Driving Crash and Fatal Consequences
The collision occurred on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at the intersection of Woodlake Parkway and Binz-Engleman Road in San Antonio. According to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, Mendoza ran a red light and struck the vehicle of a pregnant woman, causing her to go into labor and ultimately miscarry the baby.
Sheriff Salazar stated in a video on Facebook, “That vehicle had a pregnant mother inside. As a result of the accident and the injuries she sustained, she actually went into labor and ended up miscarrying the baby.”
Charges and Investigation
Mendoza was arrested on Tuesday, February 23, 2026, after authorities issued a warrant for his arrest. He faces one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office has identified Mendoza as a civilian employee at a nearby military base.
Investigators are also awaiting results from the “Intoxilyzer,” a machine used to measure breath alcohol content, which could lead to an additional charge of intoxication manslaughter if Mendoza’s alcohol level exceeds the legal limit.
Fatal Collision Details
According to a probable cause affidavit, the crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. when Mendoza was speeding at 75 mph in a 40 mph zone. He ran a red light, causing a four-car pileup, with the pregnant woman’s car flipping and landing in a ditch. Emergency responders rushed the woman to the hospital, where she underwent surgery but lost the baby.
At the scene, authorities reported that Mendoza showed signs of intoxication, including bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and the smell of alcohol. An open beer bottle with some alcohol was found in the front passenger seat, according to the affidavit.
Mendoza’s Bond and Court Appearance
Mendoza is currently being held at the Bexar County Detention Center with a bond set at $125,000. He is scheduled to appear in court before Judge Miguel Najera on May 5, 2026.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities emphasized that the investigation into the crash remains ongoing, and further charges may be filed depending on the results of the breath alcohol test.
