A California man has been sentenced to decades in prison after causing a deadly crash while driving at high speed and fleeing the scene. Prosecutors said the driver ran a red light at nearly 80 miles per hour, causing a collision that killed a passenger in another vehicle. The case drew strong emotional reactions in court as the victim’s family spoke about the devastating loss.
High-Speed Crash Leads to Fatal Collision
The crash happened in 2023 at the intersection of First Street and McKinley Avenue in Fresno, California. Authorities said 39-year-old Shane Shahan was driving a Chevrolet Colorado when he ran a red light while traveling around 80 mph.
According to police, Shahan’s truck slammed into a Hyundai Elantra that had two people inside. One of the passengers, 35-year-old Jesse Espino, suffered severe injuries in the crash.
Espino was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Driver Fled the Scene After the Crash
Investigators said Shahan did not stay at the crash site to help or call for assistance. Instead, he allegedly ran away from the scene shortly after the collision.
During the trial, video footage was shown that reportedly captured Shahan looking back at the wrecked vehicles and the injured passenger before fleeing.
A Fresno police officer testified that the suspect and another person looked back at the scene and then ran away.
Police later located Shahan in a nearby neighbourhood and took him into custody.
Signs of Alcohol and Drug Use
When officers caught up with Shahan, they noticed signs that he may have been under the influence.
An officer testified that Shahan appeared nervous and was sweating heavily. The officer also reported smelling alcohol on him.
According to investigators, Shahan had alcohol in his system and marijuana was also detected.
Authorities said he had two previous DUI convictions from 2016 and 2017.
At the time of the deadly crash, Shahan was still on probation related to the 2017 drunk driving case.
Jury Quickly Reaches Guilty Verdict
The case went to trial earlier this year, where prosecutors presented evidence about the crash and Shahan’s actions afterward.
Jurors deliberated for less than one hour before returning guilty verdicts on multiple charges.
The charges included:
- Second-degree murder
- Hit-and-run resulting in death
- Driving with a suspended license
The court ultimately sentenced Shahan to 19 years to life in prison.
Judge Criticizes Driver’s Decisions
During sentencing, the judge pointed out that Shahan had several opportunities to make better choices but failed to do so.
The judge noted that Shahan had a cellphone with him but never called 911 after the crash.
According to the court, the incident was not just a single mistake but a series of dangerous and irresponsible decisions.
Victim’s Family Shares Emotional Impact
Family members of Jesse Espino spoke in court about the pain caused by the loss.
Espino’s sister, Crystal Espino, said their lives changed forever after the crash and that the family continues to struggle with the loss.
His father, Edward Espino, described the heartbreaking moment he saw his son in the hospital and said it is an image he carries with him every day.
The family said Jesse Espino’s death left a lasting impact on everyone who loved him.
