Mark Hamill has sparked significant backlash after sharing a controversial image of Donald Trump in a shallow grave, with the caption “If Only.” The Star Wars actor later deleted the post and issued an apology for the inappropriate content.
The Controversial Post
On Wednesday, Hamill shared an AI-generated image on Bluesky showing Donald Trump dead in a grave, with daisies growing around his body. The gravestone displayed the years “1946-2024,” and the post included the message “If Only.” Hamill captioned the image, writing:
“If Only — He should live long enough to witness his inevitable devastating loss in the midterms, be held accountable for his unprecedented corruption, impeached, convicted & humiliated for his countless crimes.”
Hamill also added, “Long enough to realize he’ll be disgraced in the history books, forevermore,” accompanied by the hashtag #don_TheCON.
Immediate Backlash
The post quickly drew criticism, particularly from White House spokesperson Davis Ingle, who responded in a statement to Entertainment Weekly:
“Barack Hussein Obama just appeared in a video with this deranged lunatic three days ago. Now this same person is calling for President Trump to die. Why won’t Obama and Democrats condemn this disgusting call to violence?”
This statement referred to a video where Hamill appeared alongside Barack Obama to promote the Obama Presidential Center on Star Wars Day (May 4). Critics were quick to label Hamill’s post as irresponsible and dangerous, especially considering recent violent incidents and threats against Trump.
Hamill’s Apology
After the significant backlash, Hamill deleted the controversial post and followed up with a revised version of his message. In the updated post, he clarified his intentions and apologized for the offensive image:
“Accurate Edit for Clarity: ‘He should live long enough to… be held accountable for his… crimes,'” Hamill wrote. He continued, “Actually, I was wishing him the opposite of dead, but apologize if you found the image inappropriate.” This revision came with an unflattering photo of Trump with his hair blowing in the wind.
Further Reactions from the White House
The White House Rapid Response account on X also criticized Hamill, calling him “a sick individual.” The response highlighted the potential danger of such rhetoric, stating, “These Radical Left lunatics just can’t help themselves. This kind of rhetoric is exactly what has inspired three assassination attempts in two years against our President.”
Hamill’s History of Political Criticism
This controversy is just the latest in a series of political posts by Hamill, who has been outspoken in his criticism of the Trump administration. In April, Hamill shared another AI-generated image mocking Trump, this time parodying a photo after a 2020 assassination attempt near Butler, Pa. The image featured Jimmy Kimmel in Trump’s place, alongside other late-night hosts.
Despite the criticism, Hamill has continued to share his political views, particularly on social media platforms, where he has been vocal about issues like climate change, narcissism, and his support for progressive causes.
