Marrero man accused of pushing JPSO constable into pool and briefly holding him underwater

A 58-year-old Marrero man, Shaun Schwartz, has been arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder after authorities say he pushed a deputy into a pool and tried to hold him underwater.

Deputies Respond to Disturbance Call

The incident happened Wednesday night when deputies with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a disturbance at a home on Dunleith Court. After speaking with one individual on the front porch, deputies moved toward the backyard to speak with another person involved.

Confrontation Escalates Quickly

According to authorities, Schwartz stepped in front of the deputies and shoved one of them in an attempt to block access. When officers tried to continue their investigation, the situation escalated further.

Deputy Thrown Into Pool

Officials say Schwartz grabbed a second deputy and threw him into an in-ground pool before jumping in after him. The deputy, weighed down by his gear, sank to the bottom of the five-foot-deep pool.

Investigators allege Schwartz got on top of the deputy and briefly held him underwater, preventing him from breathing.

Deputy Fights Back

Fearing he might drown, the deputy repeatedly punched Schwartz to break free and swam to the other side of the pool. As he attempted to climb out, Schwartz allegedly tried to pull him back into the water.

The struggle ended when other deputies threatened to use a Taser, prompting Schwartz to release the officer.

Injuries and Charges

The deputy suffered minor injuries, including cuts and bruises. Schwartz was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder, battery of a police officer, and resisting an officer.

Release on Bond

Schwartz was later released from jail on a $250,000 bond. The case remains under investigation as authorities move forward with legal proceedings.
