A Catholic deacon was tragically found dismembered in his home, and his adult son has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the homicide. The Omaha Police Department arrested Martin Zak, 36, on March 13, in relation to the death of his father, John Zak, a longtime deacon at St. Peter’s Catholic Church.
Discovery of the Body
The disturbing discovery was made on March 11 when Mary Zak, John Zak’s wife, became concerned after her husband failed to show up for work. She attempted to call his phone, but it rang in Martin Zak’s pocket, which he allegedly denied. A damaged back door and other suspicious circumstances prompted Mary Zak to contact the police.
When officers arrived, they discovered John Zak’s dismembered body inside the home. According to authorities:
- Knives believed to be used in the dismemberment were found in the dishwasher.
- John Zak’s torso was located in a tote under the porch, with other body parts found both inside and outside the home.
Arrest and Charges
The following day, March 12, police attempted to pull over Martin Zak but he led them on a pursuit before being apprehended. At the time of his arrest, Martin Zak was reportedly driving his father’s car and was found in possession of John Zak’s wallet.

Friends described John and Mary as loving and supportive parents. Despite struggles with his mental health, Martin Zak’s parents were committed to helping him.
- Cindy Englekamp, a family friend, said: “Mary and John were trying to be very careful and set boundaries, but still loved him. He was their son and wanted to help him. I didn’t think he would go that far, but the kids were concerned for the parents’ safety before this happened.”
