New details have emerged about a proposed underground tunnel project in New Orleans, potentially spearheaded by Elon Musk’s The Boring Company.
Mayor Helena Moreno submitted an application in February to the company’s “Tunnel Vision Challenge,” outlining plans for a tunnel connecting key downtown locations.
Proposed Tunnel Route
Documents obtained by NOLA.com show the plan, referred to as the “NOLA Loop,” would link the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center to the Hyatt Regency New Orleans, close to the Caesars Superdome.
Although the two locations are only about a mile apart, the proposal notes that travel between them can be unreliable during major events such as Mardi Gras. The tunnel is intended to offer a fast, efficient connection for visitors and residents.
Economic Potential and Funding
The proposal suggests that the NOLA Loop could generate millions of dollars in economic activity for the city by improving downtown accessibility and boosting event attendance.
Officials from The Boring Company have stated that they would cover the costs of the planning process and, if deemed feasible, would fully fund and construct the tunnel.
The project remains in its planning phase, with feasibility studies expected to determine whether the NOLA Loop could become a reality.
