The tech industry is seeing another major shake-up as Meta Platforms plans to cut around 8,000 jobs, which is nearly 10% of its workforce. The move comes as the company shifts focus and invests heavily in artificial intelligence (AI).
Meta Announces Major Layoffs
Employees were informed about the layoffs through an internal memo. The job cuts are expected to begin from May 20. According to the company, this step is part of a broader plan to make operations more efficient while putting more money into AI development.
Janelle Gale, Meta’s Chief People Officer, acknowledged the difficulty of the decision. She said the layoffs are not easy but are necessary for the company’s future direction.
Focus Shifts Towards AI Investment
The main reason behind these layoffs is Meta’s growing focus on artificial intelligence. Like many tech companies, Meta is investing heavily in AI tools and infrastructure to stay competitive in the fast-changing digital world.
Gale explained that reducing staff will help the company balance its costs while continuing to invest in new technologies.
Support for Affected Employees
Meta has said that employees who lose their jobs will receive support, including:
- Generous severance packages
- Help with finding new jobs
- Immigration support for those who need it
The company also recognised that many of these employees have made important contributions during their time at Meta.

Meta is not alone in making such decisions. Other companies are also cutting jobs while increasing AI spending. For example, Microsoft recently offered voluntary retirement to around 8,750 employees, which is about 7% of its U.S. workforce.
This shows a clear trend where companies are reshaping their teams to focus more on automation and AI-driven growth.
Meta’s Previous Layoffs
This is not the first time Meta has reduced its workforce. In recent years:
- Around 11,000 employees were laid off in November 2022
- Another 10,000 jobs were cut a few months later
As of the end of last year, Meta had nearly 79,000 employees, according to official filings.
