Former First Lady Michelle Obama urged Americans not to lecture or judge voters who supported President Donald Trump, describing their choice as “an act” of doing what they felt they had to amid economic and personal struggles.
Comments on Trump Supporters
Speaking on the “Talk Easy” podcast hosted by Sam Fragoso, Obama reflected on her disappointment after Trump was elected in 2016 and again in 2024. She noted that many voters were motivated by frustration with issues like healthcare and the rising cost of living.
Obama said, “I can’t look some people in the face and tell them you have no right to be angry or to do something that maybe is against your own interest. That’s human nature.” She described voting for Trump as “an act of ‘I don’t know what else to do’” rather than a reflection of character or morality.
Focus on Economic Struggles
She emphasised that voters struggling to make ends meet often feel powerless, leading to choices they might not otherwise make. “I just wish we had more leaders that were figuring out how to do more for the middle class, for the working folks, because those are the folks who are drowning in this economy,” she said.
Obama added that those voters are “good people” who often lack a clear way out of their financial difficulties, which can influence their political decisions.
Reflections on American Democracy
Earlier in the conversation, Obama said the U.S. has not yet “completed the assignment of actualizing this democracy.” She described the nation as being in a “janky” era, a phase of growth and evolution rather than decline. “Well, that’s the 2.0 of life… the new version doesn’t make the old one bad. It’s necessary for growth,” she said.
