Former First Lady Michelle Obama recently reflected on the pressure she says her family faced while living in the White House, arguing that they were held to much higher standards than other presidential families. Her comments, made during a podcast conversation, also included criticism of the behavior she believes would not have been accepted during her husband’s presidency.
Michelle Obama Discusses Pressure of Being ‘First’
During an episode of her podcast IMO, Michelle Obama spoke with comedian and television host Conan O’Brien about the idea of “firstness,” or the pressure faced by people who break barriers.
The conversation referenced Jackie Robinson, the first Black player in Major League Baseball’s modern era, who was often described as needing to behave flawlessly to avoid criticism.
Michelle Obama said she could relate to that experience as part of the first Black family to live in the White House during the presidency of Barack Obama.
“I know a little bit about that,” she said during the conversation.
Comments About the Current Administration
While discussing the scrutiny her family faced, Obama contrasted her experience with that of the administration of Donald Trump.
She said there was “absolutely no way” certain behaviors from the current administration would have been accepted if they had occurred while her family was in the White House.
According to Obama, her family believed they needed to be extremely careful about how they conducted themselves while serving in public office.
Expectations of Perfection
Michelle Obama said the pressure to avoid mistakes was constant during her husband’s presidency.
She described the expectation that every action had to be carefully considered and that failure was not easily forgiven.
“In order to get where we are, you don’t get here without being damn near perfect,” she said.
Obama added that many people from marginalized backgrounds often feel they must meet exceptionally high standards to achieve success.
Discussion About White House Rules and Conduct
During the conversation, O’Brien recalled traveling with Michelle Obama to a military base in the Middle East and noticing how carefully she and her team followed official procedures.
He said he was impressed by how strictly they followed rules and avoided special privileges.
Obama responded that this was intentional, saying the family understood the level of scrutiny they faced while living in the White House.
Online Reaction to Her Comments
The remarks quickly circulated online, prompting mixed reactions.
Supporters said her comments highlighted the intense scrutiny faced by trailblazing figures in politics.
Critics, however, argued that she frequently revisits grievances about her time as first lady.
Some social media users pushed back against her claims, while others defended her perspective about the challenges of breaking historical barriers.
Previous Comments About Life in the White House
Michelle Obama has spoken openly in the past about the realities of living in the White House.
She previously mentioned that while housing and staff are provided, first families still pay for personal expenses such as food.
She has also discussed the need for professional hair, makeup, and tailoring services during public appearances, explaining that maintaining a public image required additional preparation.
