A 39‑year‑old man in Michigan has been charged with second‑degree murder after he allegedly shot his girlfriend in the back of the head while her young children were in the house.
What Happened
According to authorities and local reports:
- The suspect, Zachary Fuqua, has been accused of killing 38‑year‑old Erika Sanders.
- The incident happened at a home on Sterling Street in Warren, Michigan, about 20 miles north of Detroit.
- Sanders had four children, and three of them were at home at the time of the shooting.
- Around 5:30 p.m., Fuqua is accused of shooting her in the back of the head while the kids were present.
After the Shooting
After the fatal shooting, Fuqua reportedly left the home but did not ignore the children entirely. Prosecutors say:
- As he walked away, he gave the children candy and said, “Here y’all babies go.”
- Police later found Sanders lying face‑down and unresponsive.
- Officers tracked down Fuqua nearby and arrested him.
Social Media and Warning Signs
In the days before the killing, some of Fuqua’s social media posts suggested he was struggling or thinking about something serious. One post read: “Going out with a bang,” dated March 14, three days before the shooting.
Court and Charges
Fuqua has been held in the Macomb County Jail with no bond. He is due to appear in court again on April 1. Assistant Macomb County prosecutor Jonathan Mycek noted that Fuqua showed no hesitation in killing Sanders even with her young children watching.
