Cynthia Clemons, aged 40, from Southaven, Mississippi, faces charges of abuse of a vulnerable adult and tampering with evidence. The case involves the death of her daughter, who had Down syndrome.
Timeline of Events
On March 17, a man called the police to request a welfare check on his sister, Mykryra, whom he had not seen since January. According to reports from FOX 13 Memphis, WREG, and WMC, the authorities were told conflicting details about her whereabouts, leading them to seek a search warrant for her apartment on South Park Circle.
Initially, the police found no sign of Mykryra after searching the apartment on the evening of March 17. However, on the following morning, March 18, police returned and discovered what they believe to be Mykryra’s remains. The body was reportedly found in a closet in Cynthia Clemons’ bedroom.
The Role of the Victim’s Family
Rosie Atkins, the victim’s aunt, stated that her nephew discovered a body bag in the apartment after mistakenly opening the door to Clemons’ room. The nephew, upon noticing the body bag, immediately called the police to request a welfare check.
Atkins also claimed that when Mykryra’s father would inquire about her whereabouts, Cynthia Clemons told him that Mykryra was staying with another woman who also had a child with Down syndrome. Mykryra’s brother, who worked away from home, would often ask about her, but was misled by Clemons.
