A 30-year-old Ohio woman, Hawa Hassan, is facing a felony arson charge after allegedly attempting to kill her four children by setting their apartment on fire. The incident occurred on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, and authorities were called to the scene after the children revealed their mother’s violent threats.
The Arson Incident and the Children’s Escape
According to court documents obtained by local ABC affiliate WSYX, witnesses at the scene discovered Hassan’s four children, who told their neighbors that their mother had threatened to set the apartment on fire and kill them.
Hassan is accused of starting a fire in the bedroom of their apartment while she and the children were still inside. Fortunately, the children were able to escape the apartment unharmed.
The children reportedly told neighbors that Hassan had used a lighter to start the fire while making the chilling statement that she was “going to kill them all.” The authorities responded quickly, and when Columbus Division of Police officers spoke with Hassan at the scene, she allegedly admitted to setting the fire.
Aftermath and Charges
Local reports showed significant damage to one of the apartments, which was charred on the outside of the building. No additional injuries were reported, and the children were placed into the care of Franklin County Children’s Services.
Hassan has been charged with aggravated arson, along with two misdemeanor charges: assault and domestic violence by assault. She is currently being held at Franklin County Jail without bond.
Upcoming Court Appearance
Hassan is scheduled to appear in court on May 4, where the case will proceed. The charges, especially the aggravated arson charge, carry serious legal consequences, and the case has drawn significant attention due to the danger posed to the children.
