The incident took place in Middlesboro, where emergency teams responded to a call about an unresponsive 17-month-old child on July 30, 2025. According to the Middlesboro Police Department, the child was taken to the hospital but was sadly declared dead.
Initially, the parents — Loren Gage and Dakota Spencer — were charged with serious crimes, including murder and manslaughter. At that time, authorities believed there may have been negligence involved in the child’s death.
Cause of Death
Medical officials later confirmed that the child died due to asphyxia, which was linked to co-sleeping on a couch. This means the baby likely could not breathe properly while sleeping next to an adult on a soft surface, leading to the tragic outcome.
The findings shifted the focus of the case from intentional harm to a possible accidental situation, which became an important factor in the legal review.
