The search for missing 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie has now entered its seventh week, with growing concern and new theories emerging about what may have happened. The case has drawn national attention, especially because she is the mother of Savannah Guthrie.
What we know about the disappearance
Nancy Guthrie was reported missing on January 31 from her home in Tucson. Authorities believe she may have been abducted. Since then, investigators have released doorbell camera footage showing a masked individual and have shared limited details about a possible suspect.
Another key detail in the case is that Nancy’s pacemaker stopped syncing with her Apple Watch on February 1. This raised serious concerns about her health, as she reportedly needed daily medication and had limited mobility.
Former police chief shares his theory
Rick Kastigar, a former boss of the current sheriff, has shared a concerning theory about the case. He believes that more than one person may have been involved in the abduction.
According to him, the kidnappers may have initially planned to keep Nancy alive in order to demand money from her family. He suggested that taking her to Mexico could have been part of that plan, especially to manage her medical needs.
Possibility of being taken to Mexico
Kastigar explained that if the crime was carefully planned, moving Nancy across the border into Mexico could have helped the suspects avoid detection while also providing access to medical support.
His theory is based on the idea that kidnappers would want to keep a victim alive to negotiate. However, this plan may not have worked as intended.
A grim possibility
Kastigar also shared a more troubling belief — that Nancy may no longer be alive. He suggested that something could have gone wrong during the kidnapping, possibly related to her health condition.
If that happened, it would explain why no demands or communication have been made to the family. Without a living victim, the kidnappers would lose any leverage they might have had.
Family’s public appeals
Nancy’s family, including Savannah Guthrie, has made emotional appeals asking for her safe return. Observers have noted that their messages focus on bringing her home, without clearly stating whether they believe she is still alive.
This has led to further speculation, although authorities have not confirmed any such conclusions.
Investigation continues
The case remains under active investigation, with law enforcement continuing to search for clues. Officials have not confirmed Kastigar’s theory and are likely considering multiple possibilities.
At this stage, there are still many unanswered questions, including the identity of the suspect and what exactly happened after Nancy disappeared.
