A dramatic series of crimes across multiple Louisiana parishes ended with the arrest of a Napoleonville man after he allegedly jumped off the Causeway Bridge into Lake Pontchartrain while trying to escape police. Authorities said the suspect is connected to several violent incidents, including stabbing attacks, vehicle thefts, and attempted carjackings.
Napoleonville Man Arrested After Jumping From Causeway Bridge
Officials identified the suspect as 45-year-old Kentrell Tremaine Sanders of Napoleonville. He now faces several serious charges, including attempted second-degree murder, home invasion, aggravated battery, and carjacking. Authorities also confirmed that additional charges connected to another stolen vehicle are expected.
Investigators said Sanders’ dramatic arrest happened after the stolen vehicle he was driving ran out of gas while crossing the southbound side of the Causeway Bridge.
According to officials, the incident forced authorities to close the southbound lanes of the bridge around 10:46 a.m. Traffic remained blocked while emergency crews worked to rescue Sanders from Lake Pontchartrain after he jumped from the bridge in an attempt to avoid arrest.
Authorities said Sanders initially refused to enter a rescue bucket lowered to him in the water. Rescue crews eventually pulled him out safely around 11:20 a.m. Southbound traffic on the bridge reopened shortly before noon.
Suspect Allegedly Tried to Escape Police
Carlton Dufrechou, general manager of the Greater New Orleans Expressway Commission, explained that police had been pursuing Sanders after he allegedly attempted to carjack someone in Mandeville.
Officials said Sanders stopped near Mile Marker 10 after the truck he was driving ran out of fuel. When officers approached the vehicle, Sanders allegedly jumped over the side of the bridge into the lake below.
Authorities later recovered him safely from the water and placed him into police custody.
Violent Incidents Began Earlier in Assumption Parish
Investigators said the crime spree started early Wednesday morning in Assumption Parish.
The first emergency call came around 6 a.m. from Assumption Community Hospital in Napoleonville. Officials said a victim arrived at the hospital with multiple stab wounds to the head.
According to investigators, the victim identified Sanders as the man responsible for breaking into his home and attacking him while he slept. Authorities said the victim woke up to find Sanders standing over him and stabbing him in the head.
The victim suffered serious injuries but is currently in stable condition and is expected to survive. Officials added that Sanders and the victim knew each other from the local community.
Second Victim Reportedly Stabbed and Carjacked
Shortly after the first attack, authorities received another report involving a second victim on Jefferson Street in Napoleonville.
Officials said the second victim was sitting inside his truck at a small grocery store when Sanders allegedly entered the passenger side of the vehicle carrying what appeared to be a screwdriver or ice pick.
Investigators said Sanders ordered the victim to drive south of Napoleonville toward Highway 400. Once they reached the area, Sanders allegedly forced the victim out of the truck and drove away in the stolen vehicle.
The victim later returned to Napoleonville and contacted police. Authorities confirmed that his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Vehicle Theft and Police Pursuit Across Parishes
Officials said Sanders later stole a second vehicle after abandoning the first one.
The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office reported responding to another vehicle theft on Airline Highway near Highway 42 around 8:30 a.m. Deputies said the pursuit later moved into East Baton Rouge Parish as authorities continued tracking the suspect.
Investigators believe Sanders continued driving until he eventually reached Mandeville and the Causeway Bridge area.
Attempted Carjacking in Mandeville
Mandeville Police also connected Sanders to an attempted carjacking at a gas station near Louisiana Highway 22 and the West Causeway Approach.
According to Sgt. Timothy McJunkin, a driver was pumping gas at the Discount Zone station when Sanders drove up in a white truck believed to have been stolen earlier.
Police said Sanders attempted to enter the victim’s vehicle, leading to a physical altercation between the two men. The suspect was eventually removed from the vehicle before driving away toward the Causeway Bridge.
Authorities said the stolen truck eventually ran out of gas while crossing the bridge, leading to the dramatic confrontation and rescue operation.
Mandeville police confirmed Sanders will also face charges there related to attempted carjacking, theft, and simple battery.
Victims Expected to Survive
Deputies stated that the first victim suffered serious injuries but remains stable and is expected to recover. The second victim’s injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
Authorities continue investigating the full timeline of events and are expected to file additional charges as the case develops.
