New Orleans leaders urge residents to prepare now, as hurricane season approaches

With hurricane season officially starting Monday, officials in New Orleans are encouraging residents to prepare early for storms that can rapidly strengthen.

Mayor Helena Moreno said it only takes one storm to make hurricane season dangerous for the region.

She urged residents to stock up on batteries, water, and other emergency supplies while also making plans for shelter or evacuation if needed.

Moreno also warned people not to wait for official evacuation orders if they feel unsafe during a potential storm.

Officials Discuss Emergency Response Plans

On Tuesday, more than 100 local, state, and federal leaders met to discuss hurricane response plans and emergency coordination efforts.

Michael Harrison said the city prepares for worst-case scenarios during hurricane season.

Officials discussed plans involving evacuation traffic management, transportation assistance, protection of critical infrastructure, anti-looting patrols, rescue operations, and post-storm re-entry efforts.

Drainage and Power Systems Being Improved

Randy Hayman said 87 of the city’s 93 major drainage pumps are currently operational.

Hayman also said the city is better prepared this year because of a new power complex that helps supply electricity to drainage pumps.

The new system includes a dedicated Entergy substation and equipment designed to convert power needed for the city’s drainage system.

Entergy Working to Strengthen Power Grid

Entergy said crews are continuing efforts to strengthen the electrical grid ahead of hurricane season.

The company is upgrading power poles, clearing vegetation, and making additional system improvements to reduce storm damage risks.

Officials noted that if widespread outages occur during a storm, crews must wait until dangerous weather passes before beginning repairs and damage assessments.

Residents Encouraged to Sign Up for Smart911

City officials are also encouraging residents to register for Smart911, a system that allows households to share important information with emergency responders.

Officials said the program can help first responders identify residents with special medical needs or other emergency concerns during hurricanes and severe weather events.

Officials Stress Importance of Early Preparation

As hurricane season begins, city leaders say preparation is one of the best ways residents can protect themselves and their families. Officials continue urging people in New Orleans to review emergency plans, prepare supplies, and stay informed throughout the season, especially as storms have become known for rapidly intensifying in the Gulf region.
