New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has described his working relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump as “honest, direct and productive,” even as political tensions between them continue to grow. Their connection reflects a mix of cooperation and disagreement, especially on policies affecting New York City’s economy and future.
A working relationship despite political differences
Mamdani said that his communication with Trump has been open and useful. He explained that as mayor, he needs to maintain a strong connection with the federal government because many city projects depend on national support.
He also pointed out that both he and Trump share a connection to New York City, which helps their discussions. According to Mamdani, their conversations are not just formal but also detailed, sometimes covering local issues like zoning laws in Manhattan. This shows that their talks go beyond politics and focus on practical matters affecting the city.
Tension over new tax proposal
Despite this working relationship, tensions rose after Mamdani proposed a new tax targeting wealthy property owners. The plan, known as a pied-à-terre tax, would apply to expensive homes worth over $5 million that are not used as primary residences.
Trump strongly criticised the idea, saying it would harm New York City and push people away. He argued that high taxes could damage the economy and make the situation worse.
Mamdani, however, defended the proposal. He said the tax could generate around $500 million, which would be used to support key public services. According to him, taxing the rich is necessary to improve the lives of everyday New Yorkers.
Focus on public welfare and city services
The mayor has been actively working on several major projects since taking office. One of his biggest goals is to expand free child care across New York City. In partnership with Kathy Hochul, his administration has already started offering free child care for young children, with plans to expand it further in the coming years.
Mamdani has also introduced the idea of government-run grocery stores. These stores aim to provide essential items like bread and eggs at lower prices. He believes this will help families manage rising living costs, which have become a serious concern in the city.
Another important proposal is to make public buses free. However, this plan has faced delays due to a large budget deficit. Still, Mamdani remains confident that progress will be made over time.
Rising costs and global challenges
Mamdani highlighted that increasing prices are not just a local issue but part of a larger global problem. He partly blamed the ongoing conflict with Iran for making the cost-of-living crisis worse.
According to him, such international events affect everyday expenses, including food and fuel. He also stressed that people should oppose war not only for moral and political reasons but also because of its economic impact.

When cooperation brings results
Even with disagreements, Mamdani shared an example where his relationship with Trump helped solve a real issue. He mentioned the case of a student from Columbia University who had been detained by immigration authorities.
After Mamdani raised the matter directly with Trump, the president reportedly took action and approved the student’s release within a short time. The mayor used this example to show that honest communication can sometimes lead to quick results.
Looking ahead with a results-focused approach
Mamdani made it clear that his main focus is on delivering results for New Yorkers rather than getting involved in national political debates. He said people in the city care more about real improvements, such as better roads, lower costs, and improved services, than political arguments.
He also expressed confidence in completing his campaign promises over time, even if it takes more than one term. At the same time, he acknowledged the importance of upcoming midterm elections but stressed that his priority remains New York City.
