A heartbreaking crash in Louisiana claimed the life of a 19-year-old Louisiana State University freshman who was travelling home to Texas after completing her first year of college.
According to Louisiana State Police, the fatal accident happened Friday afternoon in Opelousas along Louisiana Highway 190 near Jennings Road.
The victim was identified as Courtney Hodge, a student from Texas who had recently completed her freshman year studying political science at LSU.
Crash Happened While Driving Home to Dallas
Troopers said the crash occurred shortly after 3 p.m. while Hodge was driving a 2025 Kia K4 behind a 2005 Kenworth commercial motor vehicle.
According to investigators, the commercial truck began slowing down as it approached a crossover on the highway.
Authorities said Hodge’s vehicle then struck the rear of the truck.
Police reported that Hodge was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.
She suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
LSU Freshman Remembered by Loved Ones
Friends, classmates, and former teammates have been mourning the sudden loss of the young student.
Courtney Hodge had just completed her first year at Louisiana State University and was reportedly travelling back home to Dallas when the tragedy occurred.
Her former cheer team from Red Oak High School shared an emotional tribute online remembering her positive spirit and lasting impact on those around her.
In a statement shared on social media, the team said Courtney would always remain part of the Red Oak Cheer family and that her memory would continue living in the hearts of people who knew and loved her.
Investigation Still Ongoing
Louisiana State Police confirmed the crash remains under investigation.
Authorities have not yet released additional details regarding road conditions, vehicle speeds, or whether other factors may have contributed to the collision.
