A Texas mother, Kaitlyn Rose Laura, has been charged with aggravated assault and causing serious bodily injury to her 3-year-old son in what authorities believe is a shocking case of Munchausen by Proxy, a condition where a caregiver intentionally harms a child to gain attention and sympathy.
The Allegations Against Kaitlyn Rose Laura
Laura, 30, allegedly forced her young son to undergo unnecessary surgeries, use a wheelchair, and eat through a feeding tube, despite the child not needing such medical treatments. According to authorities, Laura claimed that her son suffered from cerebral palsy and was unable to walk or eat solid food, but medical staff and the child’s school teacher reported that there was no medical evidence to support these claims.
What is Munchausen by Proxy?
Munchausen by Proxy is a psychological disorder in which a caregiver, often a parent, deliberately causes or exaggerates medical conditions in a child to gain attention and sympathy from others. In this case, Laura’s behavior seemed to fit the pattern of Munchausen by Proxy, as she subjected her son to harmful treatments for no reason other than to make herself appear sympathetic.
How the Abuse Unfolded
Laura told doctors that complications during her son’s birth in August 2022, including a lack of oxygen, had caused his disabilities. She claimed that the child couldn’t eat solid food and was deteriorating, though these claims were not backed by medical records. Despite this, Laura continued to harass doctors and medical staff at multiple hospitals, pushing for treatments that were not necessary.
In May 2023, after Laura’s persistent demands, the child was given a feeding tube. However, later reports from medical staff and the child’s teacher revealed that the boy could eat solid food and did not need a wheelchair or walking device. Despite these findings, Laura continued to seek medical interventions.
The Investigation and Arrest
The abuse was first reported to Child Protective Services (CPS) in June 2023, but it wasn’t until December 2023 that another feeding tube was implanted. Laura removed the boy from school, continuing to seek medical treatments for him.
Authorities finally intervened on Valentine’s Day 2024, taking the child from his mother’s custody. This led to a deeper investigation into Laura’s actions and her arrest in March 2024.
Fundraising Fraud and Medicaid Investigation
In addition to the abuse, Laura allegedly created three fraudulent GoFundMe fundraising pages to gather money under false pretenses, claiming her son’s medical treatments required financial support. Authorities are also investigating whether Laura committed Medicaid fraud as part of the case.
The Impact on the Child
Sheriff Bill Waybourn described the case as “heartbreaking,” noting that the child would have to live with the scars from unnecessary surgeries. The trauma caused by such abuse could affect the child for many years.
