Samantha Hardiman, a 30-year-old mother from Toledo, Ohio, has been sentenced to at least 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of her 7-year-old son, Kristopher Snyder. The young boy, who had special needs, weighed just 19 pounds when he was found dead in a playpen at their home.
Details of the Tragic Death
On June 2, 2023, Toledo police responded to a distress call from a residence on Freeman Street. Officers discovered Kristopher deceased and alone in a playpen, severely emaciated and with pale skin. A subsequent medical examination confirmed that Kristopher’s death was a result of malnutrition and dehydration, compounded by cerebral palsy and epilepsy.
The boy had not received in-person medical care for approximately four years, with his mother only scheduling telehealth appointments for him.
Neglect and Harrowing Living Conditions
Investigators uncovered disturbing evidence of neglect, including ample food in the home alongside marijuana and alcohol. The windows in the house were blacked out, further concealing the harsh living conditions that Kristopher endured.
Despite having access to free therapy and medical resources to help his condition, Hardiman failed to provide her son with proper care. She also neglected to offer necessary interventions, like a feeding tube, to help Kristopher develop the muscles needed to eat and sit up.
Plea Deal and Legal Consequences
Hardiman pleaded guilty to murder, and in exchange, five other charges, including involuntary manslaughter and endangering children, were dropped. As a result, she was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. The prosecution has indicated they will oppose her release after the 15-year minimum parole eligibility period.
Hardiman’s boyfriend, 29-year-old Joshua Mulvey, is also facing charges related to the case. He has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and is scheduled to go on trial on May 12, 2026. Prosecutors argue that Mulvey, who lived in the home with Kristopher and Hardiman for about two years, had a duty to ensure the child’s basic nutritional needs were met.
The Ongoing Legal Case for Mulvey
Mulvey has pleaded not guilty to the charges, with his defense stating that he believes he should not even be facing prosecution. He has expressed his intent to be part of the legal process and seek answers for the tragic event.
